Common Milkcap mushrooms produce a milky latex when their gills or flesh are damaged, often have decurrent gills, and grow on forest soil in association with trees as mycorrhizal fungi. Some species are edible while others are not, so identification to species is important. Inocybe dulcamara is a small brown mushroom with fibrous caps and stems that does not exude milk when cut, and belongs to a genus containing many poisonous species. It grows in similar forest habitats as a mycorrhizal fungus, but because many Inocybe contain dangerous levels of muscarine, they should generally be avoided for consumption.
