Shelf Fungi Shelf Fungi are tough, often woody mushrooms that grow directly from tree trunks, logs, and stumps, forming shelves or brackets. Most are decomposers that break down dead wood, though some species can also parasitize living trees, playing a major role in forest nutrient cycling. Tremellales (Jelly Fungi) Tremellales are gelatinous, often translucent mushrooms found on dead branches and decaying wood, especially during wet weather. Many species are not primary wood decomposers but instead parasitize other fungi already growing within the wood, effectively feeding on other fungi rather than the tree itself.
