Oak vs. Maple Trees Oak (Oak) trees typically have leaves with rounded or pointed lobes and produce acorns. Their bark is often thick and deeply furrowed with age, and they are known for their strong, sturdy branching structure. Oaks are important wildlife trees, providing food and habitat for many species. Maple (Maple) trees usually have palm-shaped leaves with 3–5 major lobes and produce paired winged seeds ("helicopters") called samaras. Branches and leaves are arranged opposite each other, and many species are famous for brilliant red, orange, or yellow fall color. Quick field tip: Look on the ground—acorns indicate an oak, while paired helicopter seeds indicate a maple. Without seeds, oak leaves tend to have deeper lobes and alternate branching, while maple leaves are more hand-shaped and grow opposite each other on the twig.
