Smooth Brome (Smooth Brome) is a tall, coarse grass that commonly grows 2–4 feet high. Its leaves are relatively broad and often show a distinctive "W"-shaped crease across the leaf blade. The seed head is an open, drooping panicle with larger, more spreading branches. It is widely used for hay and pasture and often forms dense stands. Smooth Meadow Grass (Kentucky Bluegrass) (Kentucky Bluegrass) is a shorter, finer-textured grass, usually 1–2 feet tall. The leaf tips are characteristically boat-shaped, and the plant spreads by underground rhizomes to form a dense turf. Its seed head is a delicate, pyramid-shaped panicle with much finer branches than smooth brome. Quick field tip: Fold a leaf between your fingers. If it's broad with a noticeable W-shaped crease and the plant is tall and coarse, it's likely smooth brome. If the leaf tip looks like the bow of a boat and the grass forms a fine lawn-like sod, it's Kentucky bluegrass.
